Acceptance Speech

Being chosen as an All- American Cheerleader has changed my life. This award is something I have dreamed of since I was a little girl. I feel so honored winning this award.

First, I knew at a young age I wanted to be cheerleader. I always watched competitions of T.V. At college football games I watched the cheerleaders perform with the dream of that being me some day. When I was finally old enough to tryout, I worked hard to make the team. Since then, I have been a cheerleader for five years. I have worked hard to accomplish and strive for my dream. I was on my school squad along with a competitive team. We traveled to several states to compete against other teams. It was a great experience and a lot of fun. Lastly, when I had the opportunity to be an All-American Cheerleader, I could not pass it up. I worked hard again to get my routine together. I performed a routine, jump sequence, and tumbling pass in front of several groups of judges. It was very nerve racking, but very worth it. Going into the tryout, I put a smile on my face and showed them what I had. At the awards ceremony, I waited patiently for the results. I could not believe it when they called my name. I have never been so excited in my life.

To end this, I just want to think my parents for never letting me give up on my dream. Without their help, I would not be the person I am today. They have done so much for me, from driving me to all my practices to taking time off on the weekends to watch every competition of mine. I want to encourage everyone to follow their dreams. Never give up on something you like. At times you want to quit, just keep going. It will always be worth it in the end.

West Side Story

A musical Romeo and Juliet story.

The Sharks and Jets are two feuding street gangs in 1930's Los Angeles, the Jets being White and the Sharks being Puerto Rican. At the school dance at a gym, Jet Tony falls in love with a Shark's sister, Maria. They know they can't be together because of the gang's war, but that doesn't stop them.

Meanwhile, the two gangs prepare for a rumble, and Tony tries to stop it out of love for Maria. In the process, his best friend and Jet leader Riff is killed by Maria's brother, Bernardo. In anger, Tony kills Bernardo. He realizes his mistake (killing his love's brother) and begs for forgiveness, which, of course, Maria gives him. They decide to leave the city, and the pointless hate, behind them. They plan the meet at Doc's Candy Store and take a bus to the country. Chino, the Shark Maria is supposed to marry, vows to kill Tony. Maria asks Anita, Bernardo's fiancé, to tell Tony she will be a little late meet him at Doc's Candy Store, but when Anita is mauled by the Jets, she angrily tells them that Maria is dead, murdered by Chino, which is, of course, a lie. Doc overhears this and reluctantly tells Tony. Tony is devastated and furious, and hunts Chino down so he can be killed too. Then Tony runs into Maria at the playground and is overjoyed. As soon as they embrace, Chino runs in with a gun and shoots Tony. Tony tries to stay alive but is overcome by the bullet and dies. Maria bursts into tears, devastated, and when the police come, both Jets and Sharks help carry Tony away. Baby John places Maria's head scarf on her head and Maria is the last to walk out.

Fiddler on the Roof

It is a 1971 film stage musical film, based on the stories of Sholom Aleichem.

In a small jewish town, tradition seems to be the center of everyones lives. From the clothes they wear to the jobs they perform, tradition is everything. It keeps these people "balanced" trying to scratch out a pleasent simple toon without breaking their neck on the roof. Tradition makes everyone know who he is and enables him to know what God has planned for him to do. The play shows people of the city in their workplace. Each person has their own job and practice in the village through tradition. They have certain types of people in the villiage, like the matchmaker who pairs up the children to be wed, as well as the begger, asking for food and change. "Without tradition, the lives of the villiage would be as shaky as a fiddler on the roof."

The matchmaker is comes to the farm to pair one of the daughters with her future husband. Her mind wonders off about her dead husband and she constantly forgets why she is at the farm in the first place. We learn the eldest daughter,Tzeitel, is not wanting to be matched but by a matchmaker. She doesn't feel like she should get matched right away. The other four daughters, Hodel, Shava, Shprintze, and Bielke can't even begin thinking about marriage before Tzeitel finds love. However, the eldest daughter changes their mind and by the end of their number, they make the comparison of two types of matches. (Boy and Fire) The girls sing "playing with matches a girl could get burned."

The farmer just wants to be a "rich man."The misfit newcommer makes a point to the swearing men that they need to know whats going on outside of their world. The newcomer and the farmer bond when they realize they are both poor. The farmer offers the newcomer food in exchange to give the farmer's five girls "lessons." The poor taylor and the eldest daughter want to be "matched." However, The Taylor is way too shy to ask the farmer for his daughter's hand in marraige. The butcher in town also has "found a liking" in the farmer's oldest daughter.

Meanwhile, on the day of the sabbath, tradition is shown yet again. All different kinds of family are gathered around with whatever family they have as they sing light candles and pass around the cup.

Tevye meets Lazar the butcher mistakingly thinking Lazar wants to buy a milk cow instead of marrying his daughter. After the misunderstanding is cleared, Tevye agrees to let him marry his daughter. For he is a "rich man," and his daughter would never want anything. After a drunken celebration, Tevye runs into a russian constable who warns him there will be a "demonstration" soon. The Constable has respect for the jewish village but through orders he has no way of stopping it.

Perchik's lessons with the daughter seem to be a little different than those taught by previous "tradition." He introduces the second daughter, to a world outside of tradition by dancing with her and holding her, without the need of a matchmaker. You can see an obvious effection between them. The farmer announces the news that Lazar wants his hands in marrage. The mother is filled with glee, but the eldest daughter begs for mercy not to make her marry him for she will always be unhappy with her name. Soon after, the Taylor proves to the farmer standing up to him that he is a true match. When the farmer disagrees, Motel exclaims "even a poor taylor is entitled to some happiness." Tevye realizes that the taylor is talking like a "man," and accepts that the two marry. Meanwhile he still has to break the news to Lazar as well as his wife that the original marraige is called off.

----------------------

The farmer must find a way to tell his wife that their oldest daughter is going to marry Motel and not Lazar. So while in bed with his wife he pretends to wake up from an awful nightmare. He makes up that the wedding will not go over good if she is to marry Lazar.

After the ceremony, a lot of "tradition" takes place. However by the end of the weeding ,what's always been normality, is broken by the abnormal newcomer. Although uneasy at first, the people of the jewish community are dancing with the opposite sex. The newcomer has convinced everyone that it is infact not a sin. Suddenly the celebration is interupted by russians who distruct the city as earlier promised.

As the farmer prays, he doesn't like to ask God for too much. He prays for Motel a Sewing Machine and then the camera views him carrying his own carrage. He begins to pray for a horse that is not lame but stops because he feels like its inappropriate. Later on, the newcomer has fallen for the second daughter and asks for her hand in marraige. However, again this newcomer breaks tradition for he does not ask the father for permission. The farmer exclaims "tear out my beard and uncover my head" emphasising his firm position on tradition. He is appalled by the fact that the two have found each other without the use of a matchmaker. However, Tevye soon comes to the conclusion that they share the same "matchmaker" as Adam and Eve and he gives the two his "blessing."

Tradition is all the farmer is about. He does not like change. However, he accepts it well after monologues with himself. The third daughter, Chava, has fallen for a man, Fyedka, out of her religion. Chava tells her father she wishes to marry Fyedka. She exclames that the world is changing and that it is okay. Tevye exclaimes "somethings will never change" and he denies the marraige. Later, Chava is missing. Tevye says that Chava is dead to them because he realizes they have run off together to get married. When Chava returns, she begs for her father's blessing. After debating with turning on his daughter or turning on his faith. He realizes there is "no other hand" and that he will not give his daughter her blessing. Later, the jewish community is asked to move out. Tevye, still unaccepting the changing world tells the soldier "this corner of the world has always been our home" and he refuses to leave.

Too Much Homework

Homework is very important for students, but too much homework can cause problems. Many parents have connotations about teachers sending out too much homework each night. I believe homework is important for students to do, but not outrageis amounts. Too much homework can cause a large amount of stress on students, make them not be able to do other activities, and make them unhappy.

I believe school causes a huge amount of stress on students. Students go to school 5 days and week for 7 hours. Like that isn't long enough, some teachers pile on hours and hours of homework. High school students already have several things to be stressed over. Like getting into the college they want, getting a job, and preparing for the future. If teachers gave out a less amount of homework each night, I believe students could benefit greatly. They would be able to receive more sleep each night and spend more time with their family.

Because of the large amounts of homework students get each day, they are not able to do all their activities that they would want to. High schools students want to be very involved. Some play football, basketball, or baseball, some do cheerleading and dance, and some are involved in clubs. With the large amounts of homework each night it takes up several hours in the day. With less homework, I believe students could get more involved with their school or community. Freeing up some of their time could allow them to do the things they want to do.

Homework is time consuming and causes students to become unhappy and down. If students were able to go to school and learn all day and go home to have free time or only a few hours of homework to do a night, they would be a lot more satisfied. I also believe if students received less homework each night, they would be more likely to complete it. They would feel like they can accomplish anything they set their mind to. With more free time I think students would be a lot more happy. They wouldn't have to dread going to school each day knowing they were going to have to go home each night with hours and hours of work.

Teachers sending home too much homework can cause large amounts of stress on students, stop them from doing other activities, and cause them to be unhappy. If teachers would give out less homework each night I believe students could benefit from it greatly. They would look forward to going to school each day with the thought of not having to come straight home to do more work. I think the teachers would receive positive feedback. I also believe students would show positive kinesics.

Banning Ipods..

Who & What?
Many high school principals and teachers suspect ipods are a new way for students to cheat on their tests and quizzes.

When & Where?
Students are learning how to put the answers to their tests on their ipods. They are sneaking them out during their tests to look up the answers or listen to them.

Why?
Since most schools don't allow students to use their cell phones in class, they have learned ways to put answers on their ipods,

Agree or Disagree?
I do wish ipods were allowed during parts on the school day. Since students use them as a cheating devices, I think the teachers should take them up when they are giving out a test or quiz. I do feel it is wrong for some students to use them to find answers. Cheating is wrong no matter what. I also believe students should be able to use them when they have finished all their work. During study hall is also a time ipods should be able to be used. Students can concentrate better by blocking out all the surrounding sounds.

Earthquakes, Global Warming, & European Storm

Summaries
  • Earthquakes are very dangerous. They can turn what was supposed to be a relaxing vacation into something terrible. They are known to kill thousands of people and leave others homeless. Major earthquakes have occurred in Chile, Pelluhue, Talca, Cauquenes, Curico, and San Javien.
  • Global Warming: In the public mind, it is hard to separate short-term weather events and long-range climate change. The number of people who don't believe in global warming has doubled. Scientists have long pointed out that warmer global temperatures have been increasing the rate of evaporation from the oceans, putting significantly more moisture into the atmosphere, causing heavier downfalls of both rain and snow in particular regions, including the Northeastern United States. The warmest decade on record is January 2000 to December 2009.
  • European Storms: Rescue workers in dinghies cruised flooded streets on France's Atlantic coast Monday, searching for people still trapped in their homes by storms that smashed through concrete sea walls and killed at least 62 people across Western Europe. The storm, called Xynthia, also battered Belgium, Portugal, Spain and parts of German.
Similarities
  • All of them are tragic disaster.
  • They all have left hundreds dead, homeless, and mortified.
  • They all have also been a major event in our world and always will be.
Important Idea:
Being caught in an earthquake is a terrible thing. Most people don't know when an earthquake might occur. Earthquakes can leave hundreds of people dead, homeless, with out food and clothing.
